Cloud Magic

Origins

Cloud Magic formed over a period of seven years. Starting with members Dave Menzo and Chad Golda, the two jammed and worked on song ideas written by Menzo that he had written for various solo projects. This evolved into a very creative and dynamic relationship. Golda would play bass and electronic samples, as Menzo would sing, play guitar, drums, keyboards, samples and anything else that would fulfill the need of each song. With his formal training in composition, guitar, drums, organ and voice, Menzo continued to push the writing and performances to a new level with Golda.

After a few years of collaborating with other musicians, playing live shows, and trying new things, Sarah Price entered the picture. Her angelic voice, and wonderful sense of harmony made her a perfect fit in the group. With her formal background in classical and jazz, as well her degree in Music Education, she added another technical layer in the music. Since the three were from Rochester Hills, Mi, it became very easy to get together and grow as a band.

Cloud Magic has played with a handful of drummers, all who have lent their creativity and individuality. However, it wasn’t until they met drummer Jerod Brocklehurst that Cloud Magic was finally complete. Being well versed in funk, latin, jazz, rock, and other genres, Jerod provided not only an endless encyclopedia of grooves, but a relentless energy that took the music to the next level. With this new power and stability fueling the band, Cloud Magic has been growing and morphing ever since.

Experimenting with many styles of music, and always looking for new ways to innovate sound, Cloud Magic is a creature of sound.     Ever growing.

Cloud Magic exists in two forms; the acoustic duo, and the full band.

As the acoustic duo, Dave Menzo (Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Loops) and Sarah Price (Vocals, Percussion, Guitar) create a mellow, yet exciting atmosphere. Their energy is explosive, even in small venues, and at a comfortable listening volume. Recording live guitar loops allows Menzo to play a rhythm guitar part as he sings, then seamlessly play lead guitar parts on top, taking solos that add an amazing depth to the acoustic based sound. Adding this to the duo's interlocking harmonies, and Price's percussion makes the listener feel as though he or she is listening to a group of five members, performing with style and grace.

When performing as the full band, Ryan Ptaznik (Drums) and Louis Rudner (Electric and Upright Bass) are added to the mix. Menzo sings and plays electric guitar, using an array effects, and electronics, adding new layers of sonic texture. Price plays keyboard in addition to percussion and vocals. In this dynamic setup, the band can transform its sound from a luscious folk vibe in one song, to a dance driven funk groove, and polyrhythmic jazz, all in one set.

This gives Cloud Magic the flexibility to cater each performance to the venue, occasion, and crowd. Their original music appeals to a wide variety of listeners due to its eclectic nature. One the same note, their list of covers reaches over 200 songs, including music from every decade since the 1950's.
